TIMELINE

1,5 years

ROLE

Sole designer

TEAM

1 designer
2 frontend developers
1 CTO/backend developer

RESPONSIBILITES

User Experience, Visual design, user flows, prototyping, interaction design, UX research.

Summary

My impact

Took the product to launch November 2023 and we have received really good (even if not yet measurable) customer reviews.

Actions taken

Initiated and led the disign development of a GDPR management platform. This encompasses log in and payment flow, to design a data flow mapping, build a product that support the law of GDPR, and a new brand identity(presented as it’s own project in this portfolio).

Problems identified

Catering to the diverse needs(with different base knowledge of the law) of three distinct user groups. Transforming the law into user friendly interface.

Key Learnings

Emphasized the iterative nature of product development, navigating the exhilarating challenges of designing for multiple user groups while prioritizing continuous improvement.

DESIGN PROCESS

Designing - user feedback - rethinking - designing

As nobody has succeeded 100% with this type of product before, the process has been to say at least iterative. With a classic double diamond approach

The problem

USER JOURNEY PROBLEM

GDPR is time consuming, hard to understand and costly.

Companies either ignore to even start with GDPR because its too hard, work in expensive solutions that doesn’t really fulfil all of their needs, or work in static Excel files that are impossible to work smart with.

USER PAIN POINTS

Get started with GDPR

Get a good overview of the progress

Create reports such as privacy notice

Create continuity in the work

Get legal help

Take care of a personal data request

USER INTERFACE AND USABILITY PROBLEMS

Unidentified visual identity, poor accessibility and difficult navigation

Unidentified visual identity, poor accessibility and difficult navigation

The previous design followed no guide lines, design system or colour scheme. For example, 48 different grey was used and the inconsistency made it hard for the user to navigate through the page.

Visual inconsistency and overload

It was hard for the user to understand what to do in the product and there was a need for improvements in user flow as well as accessibility. For example, buttons was light green with white text.

Poor usability and accessibility

The product needed a makeover from the very core, with GDPR in mind, and user flows.

The users

TYPE OF USERS

From beginners to experts

In the field of data privacy and GDPR there are many types of users, and of course we needed to narrow down our target group. In the MVP we targeted the beginners: smaller organisations who want to meet the basic GDPR requirements. In release 2 however, we also wanted to meet the needs in functionality of bigger companies. And, in one way a bit problematically, the users that were attracted to test our products are mostly enthusiasts(experts) that share our vision to contribute to a new area of data privacy products. This was a big challenge to balance out.

HOW I WORKED WITH USERS

development & Qualitative Research

To make sure we had both the law and the users with us, I worked close with our partners in law, data protection officers(DPO’s) and users with small or no knowledge of GDPR but shared our vision.

The solution

USER FLOWS & HOW TO UNDERSTAND THE PRODUCT

To make something complicated easier

To make sure we had both the law and the users with us, I worked close with our partners in law, data protection officers(DPO’s) and users with small or no knowledge of GDPR but shared our vision.

User flows

I have tried many sketches and the user flow has slowly emerged from hours and hours of testing. What differs us from the competitors is that regardless of your position in the organisation (IT, VD, HR etc) you can start your task and then cooperate within the organisation to get all the information needed for complience.

Understandable user interface

Copy, help texts and a clear, breathable interface will help the user navigate through the product. I also recorded two instruction videos and made a click-through guide in the product for those who might need a guiding hand in the beginning.

accessibility

I built an strategy for accessibility to include the whole team and create awareness of the new WCAG that will be valid 2025. In user interface I worked with for example contrast, color selection (removed green and white on call to action, buttons and text) and to add dots on active menue selections.

Product features

In Fairity you can start by identifying your business structure and then where you handle personal data. This is a unique approach that many beginners of GDPR can relate to. You then continue to do a data mapping where you in detail describe what you do with the data and finish by auto-generate reports. As simple is that!

Smartness built on a SaaS-platform

Auto-generated content is made possible because of two things: a new standard of GDPR-content and a smart platform. This leads to a time saving and a cost effective way to work. This also minimises the risk of user mistakes.

FINISHED PRODUCT:

Business overview

The Business overview is where you define your business structure and the handling of personal data.

FINISHED PRODUCT:

Data flow

Data flow is a way to visualise how the personal data is handled within the organisation. The workspace is expandable and zoom-in friendly, just as tools such as Figma or Google maps. Items is drag-and-drop from the menu or added from suggested "ghost" items as below.

FINISHED PRODUCT:

Set up account flow

Set up and payment flow (new user).

FINISHED PRODUCT:

Reports: Record of processing activities

As a part of the product, I also made layouts for the reports.
